Dissertation note: Thesis (PH.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Science - Department Of Zoology Summary: The present study was undertaken to study the effect of whole body gamma irradiation of male albino rats at the lethal dose level of 8 Gy , on the blood levels of pituitary - thyroid axis hormones (TSH , T3 and T4) and their related metabolites (glucose , cholesterol , triglycerides , protein and urea) as well as transaminases enzymes (ALT and AST) Attempts have been made to screen the prophylactic or the curative effect of a drug containing a mixture of antioxidants (Hepanox) against the radiation induced disorders on the above axisThe drug was injected intraperitoneally with a dose of 10 mg / 100g body weightThe animals were sacrificed and blood samples were collected at 1 , 3 , 7 , 14 and 21 days post - irradiation and / or injectionWhole body gamma irradiation induced a significant decrease in T3 and T4 levels with a significant increase in T3 / T4 ratioowever TSH level showed a significant elevation in 1st , 7th and 21st days post irradiationAlso , irradiation induced alteration in levels of plasma glucose , cholesterol , triglycerides , protein , urea and transaminases activityOn the other hand , injection of Hepanox pre or post - irradiation has ameliorated the deleterious effects induced by ionizing radiation in
