Pneumothorax is a life threatening condition with high morbidity and mortality as it is associated with an increased risk of intraventricular hemorrahge, chronic lung disease and death (Watkinson and Tiron, 2005). Pneumothorax occurs, more frequent in the neonatal period than at any other time of life, with a higher risk in infants with respiratory distress syndrome, meconium aspiration syndrome, pulmonary hypoplasia and in infants exposed to vigorous resuscitation at birth. Positive pressure ventilation and continuous positive airway pressure further increase the incidence of pneumothorax which can be reduced by usage of high frequency oscillatory ventilation (Burns, 2005). Other variables such as sex, birth weight, intrauterine hypoxia, term versus preterm delivery, vaginal versus Cesarean section delivery and improper suctioning during nursing may also affect the incidence of pneumothorax (Ilce et al., 2008). The aim of this study: is to evaluate the morbidity and mortality of pneumothorax in newborn babies admitted to NICU of Aljamia Alsharyia Hospital. Patients and methods: This study included 600 neonates receiving ventilatory support (MV and CPAP) out of 1000 totally admitted neonates in NICU during 6 months period. The studied cases (600 neonates) were divided into160 neonates suffering from pneumothorax (group A) and 440 neonates without development of pneumothorax (group B)
