Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Engineering - Department of Civil Engineering
In this research, a numerical study was performed to investigate the effect of tunneling process on pile group performance. The methodology of the study comprises three stages. The first stage is the verification of the numerical model, the second stage is a comprehensive parametric study and the third stage is the validation of the results. The finite element program PLAXIS was used in the analysis. A 3D finite element model was developed and verified using field data. A comprehensive parametric study was then performed to investigate the effect of different parameters on the performance of pile group. In addition, the effect of the different parameters on the tunneling process was investigated. The parameters included the horizontal clearance between tunnel and pile group, C, tunnel depth, Z, soil relative density, tunnel advancement and pile position. The validation of the results was done by comparing the results of PLAXIS 3D with old studies. The results of the study were used to develop influence zones for the percentage of increase in pile vertical displacement and bending moment due to tunneling process
