This study has examined aspects of cross-cultural relations that determine or shape identities in selected works of two Arab women novelists Ahdaf Soueif and Hanan al-Shaykh. It addresses the issue of cross-cultural communication and the social and ideological barriers that are built through the discourse of orientalism and colonialism. Both writers set their role to negotiate and manipulate the tensions created by these dichotomies: us/ them, west /east, colonized/colonizer in both Arab and diasporic contexts.
