Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Institute of African Researches and Studies - Department of Natural Resources
Drought is the one of most important climate parameters related to natural hazard impacting Ethiopia from time to time. Drought occurs anywhere in the world but its damage is not as severe as in Africa in general and in Ethiopia in particular. In this study, two indices: Vegetation Health Index (VHI) and Stander precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) are used to evaluate and monitor the drought on Ethiopia. VHI is based on -remote sensing- satellite data; it is calculated for the period from 2001 to 2013 based on data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) on the terra satellite used the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Land Surface Temperature (LST). The results show that several years were subjected to droughts. The highest drought is 2009 by 83% from Ethiopian{u2019}s area and the lowest one is 2007 by 26% from Ethiopian{u2019}s area and generally 39% from Ethiopian{u2019}s area are low vulnerable to drought, 30% are moderate vulnerable to drought, 15% high vulnerable to drought
