Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Biotechnology Summary: Amoebiasis is a disease caused by E. histolytica parasite and leads to intestinal inflammation and liver abscess. In this study, the effects of BV, CS nanoparticles and BV loaded CS nanoparticles on E. histolytica infection in mice were evaluated. Nanoparticles were prepared by ionic gelation method. Nanoparticles appeared with a smooth surface, spherical shape and a size range of 90-140 nm. In this work, E. histolytica infected mice were treated with BV (0.1 æg/g) CS nanoparticles and BV loaded CS nanoparticles. It was observed that used treatments resulted in significant reductions in the counts of E. histolytica cysts in mice intestine and stool, as well as in the levels of cytokines in mice serum, with the highest reductions in the counts of cysts in mice intestine (1.03) and stool (103.88) as well as, in the levels of cytokines (TNF-Ü: 185.52 Pg/ml, IL-6: 140.78 Pg/ml, IL-10: 149.69 Pg/ml) were recorded in mice treated with BV loaded CS nanoparticles twice for one week. Also, mice treatment with BV loaded CS nanoparticles twice for one week led to complete healing in intestinal villi and normal liver appearance. Thus, BV loaded CS nanoparticles can be considered as successful treatment for E. histolytica infection
