Dissertation note: Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology Summary: Although cross-linking has become an important intervention to stop the progression of ectatic corneal disorders, a decrease in visual acuity is common during the early postoperative period. (5,6)This reduction in the visual acuity might be caused by backward light scatter from the cornea due to loss of stromal transparency. Various reasons have been proposed to explain the lack of corneal stromal transparency, including increased collagen fiber diameter, (7)keratocytes activation, (8,9) and corneal stromal refractive index alteration following cross-linking.The main cause for corneal haze after cross-linking seems to be a complicated corneal healing process involving keratocytes transformation into myofibroblasts, resulting in stromal remodeling
