  • Issued also as CD
Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University -Faculty of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology Summary: Corneal thickness is a direct correlate of the physiologic condition of the corneal endothelium. It is useful in the diagnosis of certain corneal diseases and in the monitoring of treatment effectiveness. This parameter is particularly critical in refractive surgery, which requires accurate measurement of the corneal thickness as a direct correlate of treatment outcome(Whitacre MM et al., 1993). Specular microscopy enables the study of changes occurring in the cornea under living conditions at a much higher magnification than is possible with the slit lamp. Documentation and interpretation of serial pictures captured, allow monitoring of every changes in corneal endothelium. The tissues examined are usually limited to Descemet's membrane, corneal endothelial mosaic and the posterior endothelial surface, but some detail is possible in the deep corneal layers
