Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) are lightweight materials that have a wide range of use in civil and aerospace applications due to their superior properties. Here we demonstrate the potential use of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) dispersed during fabrication of glass fiber composites (GFRP) to monitor damage propagation under static and cycle loading as well as to enable monitoring of moisture damage propagation in GFRP composites. The use of CNFs and MWCNTs enables a transformation of the typically non-conductive polymer nanocomposites and GFRP composites into new composites with appreciable electrical conductivity. Microstructural, thermal and mechanical investigations for CNFs/epoxy, MWCNTs/epoxy and GFFR composites were examined. Moreover, electromechanical properties and moisture absorption properties of GFEP composites were investigated. It was found that incorporating CNFs and MWCNTs to GFRP composites can provide an innovative means of self-sensing that will allow both mechanical damage and moisture damage propagation to be monitored with high efficiency in glass fiber composites
