Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: Family asteraceae (compositae) is one of the largest and most economically important plant families. It includes more than 25000 species and 1600 genera. Plants belong to family asteraceae having antitumor, antibacterial activities. This study comprises two parts: Part I: phytochemical investigation includes: Preliminary phytochemical screening of the aerial parts; extraction, fractionation, as well as, isolation and characterization of the main constituents of different extractives of centaurea calcitrapa L. Investigation of both petroleum-ether and ethyl acetate fractions resulted in isolation and identification of 8 compounds (four compounds from petroleum ether extract and four compounds from ethyl acetate extract) namely: Palmitic acid, Ü- amyrin, taraxasterol, stigmasterol, kampferol 3- O- Ý- D- glucopyranoside, apigenin 7- O- Ý- D- glucopyranoside, kampferol and apigenin respectively. GLC of lipoidal contents as well as HPLC quantification of polyphenols were carried out. Part II: Biological study, includes: In vivo studies ((LD50), antioxidant and hepatoprotective anti inflammatory, analgesic, anti pyretic activities) of the methanolic extract of aerial parts of the plant
