Thesis (Ph.D.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Analytical Chemistry
The art of work is to understand the degradation process within the painting materials and define the best conditions for preserving the icons. In this study, we conduct a scenario about the aging process of the icons as a proactive step in the intervention plan. The work is based on the characterization of an ancient icon and design new ones with exposure of the icons to humidity, heat, and UV irradiation at different aging times. An array of analytical techniques has been used for investigation of the ancient icon and characterization of the aging modern icons for monitoring the physico-chemical changes of the materials. The aging treatments were accompanied with changes in the chemical structures, the physical properties, the thermal stability, and the crystallinity of the materials. The degradation process is an irreversible and continuous mechanism with the capability of the paint toward the reactivity upon the fluctuations of the environmental conditions
