Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of General Surgery Summary: Anorectal physiology, mechanism of incontinence and mechanism of constipation is an area of great research potential, complete understanding is not achieved till now. Measurement of the anal canal length and average anal canal diameter using endo FLIP hence the resistance can be calculated in normal Egyptian controls. Hence it will be used in treatment of patients with incontinence and obstructed defecation. Endo-FLIP was used to measure anal canal length (ACL) and anal canal diameter (ACD) in fourty normal Egyptian controls, then using the flow equation calculator the resistance of anal canal was calculated. Fourty volunteers 33 males and 7 females mean age is 41.63. Mean anal canal length (ACL) during rest was 3.04 cm with standard deviation 0.41, Mean anal canal length (ACL) during squeeze 3.24 cm with standard deviation 0.44, Mean anal canal diameter (ACD) during rest 7.18 mm with standard deviation 0.63, Mean anal canal diameter (ACD) during squeeze 7.07 mm with standard deviation 0.45. Mean anal canal resistance at rest is 9268.4 kg m»-1s-1with standard deviation 2813.07, Mean anal canal resistance at squeeze is 10302.83 kg m»-1s-1 with standard deviation 2725.46, Mean balloon pressure at rest is 31.39 mmHg with standard deviation 16.66, and Mean balloon pressure during squeeze is 51.57 mmHg with standard deviation 23.72
