Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - National Institute of Laser Enhanced Sciences - Department of Laser Application in Medical and Biological Summary: Background: Obesity is the number one health problem greater than cancer, heart disease, or asthma.Morbid obesity can lead to type II diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and predisposes others to different form of cancers. People who suffer from morbid obesity may experience very difficult lives. Obese people often are shunned by society and blamed for having weak characters.Purpose of the study: to evaluate the relation of the serum leptin hormone level changes, as a result of changes in waist circumference (WC), body mass index (BMI) and percentage body fat mass (%BF) following application of low-level LASER therapy (LLLT) in obese women.Methods: Forty women volunteered to participate in the current study.The women were described as having local abdominal obesity as defined by waist circumference greater than 88 cm; their ages were ranged from 30 to 40 years.They were randomly divided into two equal experimental groups: A and B. {uF097} Group A consisted of 20 women with abdominal obesity and body mass index greater than 30>40 kg/m2; they were enrolled every other day in a LASER program for two months as a total period of treatment.Group B consisted of 20 women who received a combination of LASER program plus low calorie diet (ranged from 1300 to 1000 kcal per day). Women in group B had abdominal obesity and body mass index 30>40 kg/m2; and were enrolled every other day for 2 months as a total period of treatment. Both groups received Low- Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), for 15 minutes, 3 times per week for 8 weeks as a total period of treatment. Weight, BMI, WC, %Fat mass and serum leptin were measured before and after treatment for groups A and B
