Utilizing a Critical Discourse Analysis approach, this study presented a comparative quantitative and qualitative analysis of foreign and national electronic newspaper representations of the protests that took place in Egypt after president Mohamed Morsi's constitutional declaration on November 2012 as sampled by the New York Times and Ahram Online newspapers. Drawing on fairclough's (1995a) three-dimensional framework, Halliday's (2004) theory of transitivity and van Dijk's (1988) notion of news schemata, the study explored the similarities/differences in the representation of the events in the electronic newspapers both textually and discursively with the aim of describing the function of language as a powerful social practice in media discourse and more specifically in the news reporting genre. To realize this objective, 48 news reports were collected from the two newspapers in the period between November 22 - the day of the announcement of the constitutional declaration - and December 15 - the first day of the constitutional referendum
