Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Internal Medicine Summary: Objectives : Our objective is to evaluate the effect of the duration of ICU stay on the outcome of living donor liver transplantation regarding morbidity and mortalility. Methods: 49 Egyptian patients with hepatitis C virus underwent living donor liver transplantation into El Manial Cairo University Hospital, divided into two groups according to the post-transplantation ICU duration ; the first group included patients needed ICU admission for more than seven days while the second group included those who needed ICU for less than 7 days. All our patients were subjected to thorough follow up of vital signs , fluid balance , mechanical ventilation and kidney functions . Also different regimens of immunosuppressive agents were compared regarding the use of each and incidence of complications. Follow up of the patients of study was done , 3 months and 1 year following transplantation , through the data base off liver transplantation unit. Results:. Significant correlation between Child score of the patients, presence of pretransplant renal impairment, duration of mechanical ventilation needed by patients and use of Mycophenolate Mofitil as part of combined immunosuppressive drug therapy and duration of ICU stay on both long term and short term survival following transplantation .Conclusion: The factors resulting into prolonged duration of ICU stay in our cases had an impact on both short term and long term survival of patients following liver transplantation. These factors should be subjected to further studies to bevaluated
