Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology Summary: Learning and memory deficits are obvious in a duration-related way in poorly controlled diabetic patients. Hippocampus is one of the important areas responsible for memory and cognition. The hyperactivity of the renin-angiotensin system is directly associated with Ý-cell dysfunction and diabetic complications including cognitive impairment. The aim of this study was focused on the investigation of the deleterious effects of poorly controlled T1DM on perceptionas well as the potential protective effect of aliskiren, compared to captopril and ginseng against cognitive deficits resulted from poorly controlled diabetes. Diabetes was induced by multiple low doses of STZ for four consecutive days to obtain type 1diabetes. Diabetic animals were injected with an ineffective dose of insulin daily. Poorly controlled diabetic animals were subdivided into four groups, one left untreated. The other three groups received orally for four week, aliskiren, captopril and ginseng respectively
