Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Pharmacy - Department of Pharmacognosy Summary: The use of natural and eco-friendly compounds for control of synanthropic rodents instead of the chemical rodenticides is an important step in integrated pest management (IPM) nowadays. The biological efficacy of nine waste by-products, five corn cobs baits (65% corn cobs (65% CC), 90% corn cob (90%CC), 65% corn cob woody layer (65%CCW), 65% corn cob pith fraction (65%CCP) and 65% delignified corn cob powder (65% DLCC)), two rice straw baits (65% RS and 65% LDRS ) and two sugarcane bagasse baits (65% SCB and 65%DLSCB) containing cellulose as the active ingredient, was studied against the Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) under laboratory conditions. Series of bioassay detection methods of no-choice and choice feeding trials were used. The obtained results revealed that all the five tested corn cobs baits gave 100% mortality in the no choice feeding test. in the choice feeding test, 65%CCW gave 100% mortality (16.373% acceptance) While 65% CC and 90%CC recorded 60% mortality (12.08% acceptance ) and 20% mortality (3.45% acceptance ),respectively. No mortality was recorded in both of 65%CCP (2.79% acceptance) and 65%DLCC (25.42%acceptance), respectively. Complete mortality was achieved in the no choice feeding test for 65%RS bait while 65%DLRS bait recorded 80% mortality.in the choice feeding test, both 65%RS and 65%DLRS baits recorded 10% mortality. 65% SCB bait gave 100% mortality and 65% DLSCB gave 60% mortality in the no choice feeding test. While in the choice feeding test, no mortality was recorded for 65%DLSCB and 20% mortality was recorded for 65%SCB. Domestic rodents play a principle role in the transmission of several zoonotic pathogens to humans and other live stoke
