Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty Of Medicine - Department Of Neuropsychiatry Summary: IGEs are common , easly controlled , easly aggravated epilepsiesIt may need life long treatment , hence the importance of proper choic of AED according to seizure types and epilepsy syndrome , and side effect profile of the drugThis study was conducted on 225 patients with IGE : 103 patient with JME , 38 patients with CAE , 46 patients with JAE , 34 patients with EGTCSA , and 4 patients with MAERESUTS : 67 of patients were controlled on monotherapy , 17 of patients were controlled on polytherapy , and 14 of patients were not controlled83 of JME patients , 88 of EGTCSA patients , 82 of CAE patients , 83 of JAE patients and all MAE patients were controlled15 of our patients had adult onset epilepsy29 of our patients had comorbid illness with epilepsy , with sleep disorders and headaches being the most frequently encountered comorbid disordersMonotherapy was more associated with seizure controlVPA was the most commonly used drug , it was effective 84of patient who used itLow platelet count was more in patients using VPA polytherapy than those on VPA monotherapyCNS side effects were more common in patient using VPA+ESX than those on VPA+LTG , or on VPA+CBZCONCLUSION : IGE were relatively of good prognoses using the suitable - mosltly broad spectrum - AEDs , mostly as a monotherapy with a small doseIGE patients may present with the 1st seizure detected at adulthood , some of them have comorbid disorders other than epilepsy that need to be properly managed
