Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics
Background: Interest in the psychological sequelae of childhood medical illness is increasing. This is reflected in the literature examining psychological outcome in critical illness survivors and children with chronic physical health problems. Less attention has been given to assessing psychopathology after acute physical illnesses in children. Despite the severity and life threat of medical illnesses necessitating PICU admission, there is little research in this area. Objective: To determine whether PICU admission is associated with greater psychiatric morbidity in children as compared with general pediatric ward admissions. Study design and methodology: A comparative cross sectional study was conducted at Cairo university pediatric hospital. The participants of the study were 130 children aged 6-13 years discharged from PICU and general pediatric wards 6 months previously with their parents. The tools used for this study were a semi structured clinical psychiatric interview, Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) scale according to the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of mental disorders (DSM-V) or PTSD reaction index for children, the Impact of event scale revised (IES-R), the revised children manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS) and Birleson depression scale
