Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Geology
The bahar and bahar-NE oil fields are located in the southwestern coast of the gulf of Suez rift basin, some 100 km south of Ras Gharib town, at the Ras Elbahar area. The two fields belong to the southern dip province of the gulf of Suez. The objective of the present work is to study the sedimentological aspects and reservoir characterization of the lower-middle miocene sediments present in the Bahar and bahar-NE fields. It re-evaluates the structural model of the Ras Elbahar area relying on the seismic interpretation and the available drilling and geological data. This study is based on 8 boreholes data beside 3 equivalent surface successions in the adjacent areas (surface analogues) to realize regional facies development and distribution. The Ras Elbahar area including the bahar and Bahar-NE fields reflect the general structural setting of the southern gulf of Suez. These fields are two miocene structural highs separated by a basinal low, all oriented in a NW-SE direction. The stratigraphic successions of the studied area range in age from the pre-cambrian to recent. The miocene sediments represent the two distinct groups of the gharandal and ras malaab. The gharandal group forms the lower-early middle miocene sediments. It is represented by the rudeis formation while, the nukhul formation is absent due to non-deposition. The area was a palaeo-structural high during Nukhul deposition. The Rudeis Formation has a limited extension in the bahar-NE field. The formation is absent in its eastern part due to non-deposition. It is formed of calcareous shale, partly with sandstone interbeds (e.g. B.NE-8 and B.NE-9 wells). In contrast, this formation is well exhibited in the bahar field
