Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Analitical Chemistry Summary: In this study, screen printed (SPE) and carbon paste (CPE) ion selective electrodes were developed for determination of tetrabutylammonium bromide surfactant in pure and spiked tap water samples. The performance characteristics of the electrodes were evaluated in terms of composition, pH, selectivity, soaking and response time and temperature. The type and content of the different ion pairs on the performance of CPE were studied. It was found that the best contents were 15, 15 and 6 mg of TBATPB (electrode I) , TBA-PTA (electrode II) and TBA-PMA (electrode III) ion pairs, respectively which give the best Nernstian slope values 59.41 ± 0.31, 59.26 ± 0.45 and 59.95 ± 0.35 mV/decade, respectively. The type and content of different ion pairing agents (NaTPB, PMA, PTA and RN) were studied on the performance of CPEs and SPEs case of SPEs, the best contents were found to be 6, 6, 6 and 12 mg which give the best Nernstian slope values 60.71 ± 1.94, 59.75 ± 0.38, 59.73 ± 0.76 and 59.90 ± 0.51 mV decade-1 of electrodes modified with Na-TPB (electrode IV), PTA (electrode V), PMA (electrode VI) and RN (electrode VII) ion pairing agents, respectively. While in case of CPE, the best content was 9 mg of RN ion pairing agent (electrode VIII) with Nernstian slope value of 60.38 ± 0.11 mV decade-1 over the concentration range 1.0 X 10-5 {u2013} 1.0 X 10⁻² mol L⁻¹ and to improve the efficiency of electrode VIII, the paste was modified with different amounts of carbon nano-tube and the best content was found to be 100 mg of carbon nano-tube (electrode IX) with Nernstian slope value of 59.90 ± 0.45 mV decade⁻¹ over the concentration range 1.0 X 10-6 {u2013} 1.0 X 10⁻² mol L⁻¹.
