Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - National Institute Of Laser Enhanced Sciences - Department Of Laser Application In Medical and Biological Summary: The early detection of cancers is of prime importance with respect to treatment and patient survivalBiopsy techniques that are currently employed for such diagnoses are invasive and time consumingdditionally , the biopsy methods rely upon human analysis and correlation for diagnosis which leads to a larger margin of errorCancer is best treated if it is discovered earlyDiagnosis of cancer can be done by any number of proceduresThese can involve : Ultrasonic , Computerized tomography (CT) scans , Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans , Histopathology and BiopsySome spectroscopic means of detection have been studied with most research efforts focused upon laser induced auto - fluorescence (LIAF) , Photoacoustic Imaging (PAI) , Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Fourier transform Raman spectroscopy (FTRS) These techniques have the ability of providing chemical and molecular information about a sample , which has not been a possibility with conventional diagnosis techniquesThey do not require tissue removal , can be performed in - vivo , allowing the diagnosis to be made in real time , and can be used to detect small lesions with a size less than 1 mm
