Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Ophthalmology Summary: For these reasons, between 10-25% of patients with Keratoconus progress to a point where surgical intervention is required. Surgical options include: Intra-corneal ring segment insert (Intacs and kera rings), ultravioletA / riboflavin corneal crosslinkage (CR3), Lenticular (lens) refractive surgery including refractive lens exchange with toric intraocular lenses and phakic toric IOL &corneal transplantation (or grafting) including penetrating keratoplasty and Lamellar keratoplasty is the last option. [Wilson and kim, 1998]. Intra stromal corneal ring segments (kera rings) were designed to achieve refractive adjustment by flattening the cornea. Recently, they have been used to reshape keratoconic corneas to improve uncorrected visual acuity, best corrected visual acuity, and contact lens tolerance and to delay or prevent the need for keratoplasty. While flattening the center of the cornea and changing its structural pattern
