Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Mass Communication - Department of Journalism Summary: The increase in the "smart mobile phones" ownership, and the dependency on them in different aspects of our daily life, made it crucial for researchers to study this new medium. Smartphones as a new medium combine all other media in just a single device. The newspaper, radio, television, and computer became available for the audience anywhere and anytime through their smartphones. Reviewing the literature showed a shortage in the studies concerning the usage of smartphones in Egypt or the Arab world, although there are plenty of foreign studies in this area from many years ago. This field study aims at identifying the smartphone usage among the Egyptians, their patterns of usage and their preferences. Also this research discusses the motives of the Egyptians for using the news apps on smartphones to access news, as well as their reading habits and their preferred types of news. Following the news through the use of the news Apps on smartphones has some behavioral, cognitive and emotional effects that are discussed in this paper, as well as the reasons for using the news apps in following the news. This research has built its theoretical framework on the Uses and Gratifications Theory, as well as the media richness theory. The survey was conducted on 416 respondents from the Egyptian smartphone users, in order to get a comprehensive understanding for this research problem. The findings showed that the Egyptians use the "social media apps" the most (92.2%), while the news Apps were ranked the 5th (45.4%) among the preferred App categories used by the Egyptian smartphone users. The ease of use and the ability to follow the news anywhere were the main reasons among the respondents for using their smartphones in following the news through the news Apps
