This research is a semantic-pragmatic analysis of rendering irony as a rhetorical device in three translations of the Qur'an and some of the major problems translators may encounter when they embark on translating ayas containing irony. The translations selected for this study are Muhammed Mahmud Ghali's towards understanding the ever glorious Qur'an (2003), A.J. Arberry's the Koran interpreted (1998) and N. J. Dawood's the Koran 1995
