Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.)-Cairo University, 2023. Summary: This study explores plant iconography in the decoration program of the tomb of Sennedjem (TT1) in Deir el-Medina. It also presents the first specialized and comprehensive catalogue of the plant remains discovered in the tomb. The study consists of an introduction, three chapters, conclusion and results. In addition, it includes a list of abbreviations, a list of figures and a list of tables. A bibliography and an index of plant names are also presented at the end of the study. Introduction It includes the research background, the research aims, the literature review, the research questions, the methodology and the research structure. Deir el-Medina This chapter explores the environmental setting of the study area such as its geographical location, the layout of the site, the significance of the site in ancient Egyptian civilization, geology, subsistence and watering of the inhabitants. It also presents an introduction to the tomb of Sennedjem (TT1), its discovery and its architectural description. Contextual Interpretation of Plant Iconography This chapter focuses on the contextual interpretation of plant iconography in the decoration program of the tomb. The study of plant iconography is made through a two- step process including identification and interpretation. The first step is to indicate a scientific botanical identification for the depicted plants based on the analogy of the morphological features with the actual plants in nature. The second step is to interpret the depicted plants, their role and symbolism in the context of depiction, based on the textual sources of ancient Egyptian civilization, particularly the funerary texts that mainly include Pyramid and Coffin Texts and the Book of the Dead. Plant Remains from the Tomb of Sennedjem (TT1) This chapter presents a catalogue of the botanical remains discovered in the tomb. The catalogue records a total of eighteen botanical items, including a palm trunk, fruits and seeds, bouquets and garlands, classified into four categories. The catalogued items are kept in museums of different countries: Egypt, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and the USA. The information for each item is presented in a unified format comprising: the catalogue number, a title, the current location, the museum number, measurements, the description and the bibliography. The chapter also includes some remarks on the catalogued items, mentioning parallel examples from the same period. Conclusion and Results This section presents a summary of the most important results obtained from the two main parts of the study, plant iconography and plant remains.
