Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - National Institute of Laser Enhanced Science - Department of Laser Application in Engineering Summary: Optical gates are the fundamental building units for the development of photonic networks in which information is handled exclusively in the optical domain without problematic optoelectronic conversions. In this thesis all optical molecular logic gates (AND, XOR) are proposed and implemented using azo dye doped polymer film (DR1 doped PMMA) based on holographic diffraction grating. First, the linear polarization grating of the four dyes doped in polymer DR167- PMMA, DR13-PMMA, MR-PMMA and DR1- PMMA films and their response is discussed. In the proposed system, scaling down the setup size has been realized by replacing gas lasers by semiconductor laser diode. Consequently, the setup cost has been considerably reduced. We verified the laws of diffraction and calculated the number of lines per mm. We used a red beam from laser diode as a probe. The diffraction of the red beam is measured. The effect of temperature on the diffraction grating is measured. We tested the performance of the proposed gate with modulated input signal. Three types of modulated signals are presented AM (amplitude modulation), FM (frequency modulation), OOK (ON-OFF Keying) modulation
