The thesis analyzes John Fowles's treatment of the concept of freedom in his first three nonvels : The Collector (1963) , The Magus (1965) and The French Lieutenant's Woman (1969) . The study examines his preoccupation with this concept at the thematic and technical levels in the selected fiction . The thesis deals with Fowles's treatment of this concept in terms of his depiction of the collecting tendency as a life - denying force on the personal , social and political levels
