Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Background: Ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common congenital heart defects. Surgical management of VSD still have many adverse effects either early postoperative or in late outcome. Aim of the work: we aimed to study outcome and incidence of various postoperative complications after surgical repair of VSD. Methods: cross sectional descriptive study was conducted in Cairo University new Children Hospital (CUCH). Cases of surgically closed VSD were included. History taking, clinical examination, 12 leads ECG and transthoracic color Doppler Echocardiography were done. Cases were classified into 2 groups. Group 1 perimembranous VSD and group 2 muscular VSD. Results: the studied cases were 156 cases (75 males, 81 females), perimembranous VSD was more common than muscular VSD (128 versus 28), majority of patients didn't develop immediate postoperative complications (71.1%),the most common post operative incident was prolonged hospital stay and ICU admission (12.8%), weight percentile improved significantly postoperatively (p value <0.001), pulmonary hypertension improved significantly postoperatively ( p value < 0.001). the most common post operative ECG finding was RBBB ( 31.4 %). Majority of cases were in stage I heart failure (69.9%).residual VSD was present in17.9% of the studied cases. Conclusion: VSD closure was successful in the majority of cases with significant reduction in pulmonary artery pressure after surgery
