Purpose: Evaluation of the behavior of orbital cellulitis secondary to sinusitis and detection of the causative organisms in patients presenting to Al Kasr Al Ainy University Hospital.Materials and methods:This is a Cohort (Longitudinal) study in which forty three patients diagnosed to have orbital cellulitis secondary to sinusitis were admitted to the hospital and treated on inpatient basis over a period of six months. All patients were subjected to full ophthalmological examination, systemic evaluation, and ear, nose, and throat (ENT) consultation. Axial and coronal computed tomography (CT scan) of orbit, paranasal sinuses and brain (when fungal suspect) were done for all patients. Some patients had specimen sent for culture and sensitivity. All patients received medical treatment, seven patients (16.2%) needed addition of steroid and twenty patients needed surgical intervention. Results: Twenty patients (46.6%) had all sinus affection (frontal, ethmiodal, sphenoid and maxillary), four patients (9.3%) had ethmoidomaxillary sinus affection and nineteen patients (44.2%) had only ethmoidal sinus affection.Twenty patients (46.5%) had a specimen sent for culture and sensitivity from the drained pus from sinuses or lid abscesses, Five patients (11.6%) had bacterial infections, seven patients (16.3%) had fungal infections and eight patients (18.6%) had no growth.Thirty nine patients (90.7%) responded to treatment and four patients (9.3%) had recurrence within 6 month.There was no correlation between the response to treatment and the age, sex, general condition, associated conditions, symptoms, signs, type of causative organism and modalities of treatment
