Cisplatin is a widely used and highly effective chemotherapeutic agent. One of the limiting side effects of cisplatin is nephrotoxicity where acute kidney injury (AKI) is highly manifested. In the present work, the regenerative potential of a combined treatment comprising exogenous epidermal growth factor (EGF) and low level laser therapy (LLLT) in AKI induced in rats by a single injection of cisplatin, was investigated. Kidney function associated biomarkers, serum hormones, total proteins, kidney injury molecule-1 (Kim-1) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), in addition, to histopathological examination and DNA gel electrophoresis, were performed for control group and after cisplatin injection to confirm AKI induction, and also after receiving the proposed treatments of EGF and/or LLLT. The results revealed that the simultaneous treatment by EGF and LLLT was a more efficient modality in alleviating AKI, compared to each of EGF or LLLT when used separately
