Data visualizations are recently used to present news and inform the audience. The study investigates the effect of data visualization on news comprehension, perceived credibility, and recall. The cognitive theory of multimedia learning is used as a theoretical foundation for this study. The effect was examined using a pretest-posttest experimental design (N = 61), using three news reports; each with a different type of data visualization where a control group viewed the three reports without data visualizations and an experimental group viewed the same three reports with data visualizations. It was hypothesized that visualizations will result in higher comprehension, perceived credibility, and recall levels. Results showed that data visualizations increased news comprehension and recall, however, no significant differences were found for perceived credibility between the two groups. Based on these findings, the potential of leveraging the impact of news by incorporating data visualizations in the news-making process is discussed
