Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Agriculture - Department of Agricultural Biochemistry Summary: The proximate analysis of Ginkgo biloba leaves (GBL) was found that the ash, crude protein, total lipid and total carbohydrate in GBL were 12.82%, 5.83%, 4.8% and 76.55 % dry weight, respectively. Preliminary phytochemical screening of successive extracts of GBL revealed the presence of flavonoids, saponins, sterols and / or triterpene, alkaloids and tannins in abundance in GB ethanolic extract when compared with the other extracts: petrolum.ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate and water. The ethanolic extract of GBL has a more phenolic content (65.4mg gallic/g) and the highest antioxidant capacity comparing with the other solvent. The quantitative analysis of total flavonoid and phenolic compounds in GB ethanolic (GBE) extract was assessed by HPLC. GBE extract contains antioxidant flavonoids such as Hespirdin that represents the highest amount (17673ppm) followed by Naringin (1513.52ppm), Apigenin-7-glucose (1034.21ppm) and poly phenolic copmpounds such as Protocatchuic (3455.8ppm), Coumarin (1406.4ppm), and Caffeine (1337.6ppm). High dose (216mg / kg b.w.) of Amoxicillin-clavulanate (AC, Augmentin) induced a significant increase in ALT, AST, ALP activities, total bilirubin level (TB) and significant decrease in serum albumin (Alb), total protein (TP) levels accompanied with a significant increase in MDA content, significant decrease in SOD activity and GSH in liver tissue comparing with normal rats. The administration of GBE either in low (GL, 100mg/kg b.wt.) or high doses (GH, 200mg/kg b.wt) for 30 days elicited no effect on the examined parameter. Silymarin (Sil, 50mg/kg b.wt.) was employed in this study as a reference hepatoprotective agent
