Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.)-Cairo University, 2024. Summary: Background: Extensive research studies indicate that Internet addiction (IA) is strongly associated with high rates of mental illness morbidity. ADHD being among the most frequent disorders within adolescent psychiatry and the most frequent neurodevelopment disorder, its association with IA became essential. As social skill deficits seem to be a part of the clinical picture of ADHD, the association between IA and social skill deficits in the presence of ADHD became a main concern. Objectives: Assessing social skills among participants with ADHD together with Internet addiction in early adolescence and detecting the frequency of Internet addiction and activities among individuals with ADHD in early adolescence. Methods: This observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted during the period from March 2023 to January 2024. A total of 185 subjects aged between 11 and 14 years old were recruited from Child ADHD clinic located in the Center of Social and Preventive Medicine and from Child outpatient clinic located in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Cairo University. Participants were evaluated on Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorder and Schizophrenia-Present and Lifetime Version (K-SAD-PL), Conner’s Parent Rating Scale- Revised Long version (CPRS-R-L), Social Skills Checklist and The Digital Addiction Scale (DASC). Results: About two-thirds of the participants (63.2%) were classified as Internet Addicts. Adolescents with ADHD showed significant deficits in social skills when diagnosed with IA compared with those without IA. The “predominantly inattentive ADHD subtype” and “the social skills deficits” were responsible for more than one-fourth of the predicting factors of IA. There was a positive correlation between severity of ADHD and deficits of social skills in adolescents with IA. Conclusion: Adolescents with ADHD are at greater risk of social skills deficits when diagnosed with IA. ADHD severity increase the probability of social skills deficits. Social skills deficits should be considered targets in prevention and intervention programs for treating Internet addiction among adolescents with ADHD.Summary:
