Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Science - Department of Zoology Summary: This work aims to evaluate the antifungal, antioxidant and antigenotoxic effects of the chitosan extract from shrimp shells (CE), as a new alternative or complementary anti-fungal drug, alone or in combination with amphotericin B (AMB) against a pathogenic Candida albicans (C. albicans) in mice. The effectiveness of CE and CE+AMB was compared with AMB as a classical antifungal treatment. Infection with C.albicans, in neutopenic mice, caused an undesirable effect on most of the studied biochemical and genotoxic (DNA fragmentation and comet assay) parameters. In addition, infection with C. albicans induced changes in the architecture of lung tissue. Administration of CE, AMB and CE+AMB as compared to infected untreated group, for 24 and 72 h, caused a significant effect on all the studied parameters. Moreover, administration of CE and CE+AMB repairs, to great extent, the abnormal architecture of lung tissue induced by candidiasis
