Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Medicine - Department of Pediatrics Summary: Introduction: Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation which plays a major role in regulating insulin effect and insulin mediated glucose uptake. It has been shown that serum magnesium levels may be related to insulin resistance associated with childhood obesity. Objective: To measure serum magnesium level in obese children and evaluate its correlation with insulin resistance. Patients and methods: This case control study was conducted over 6 months including; one hundred children diagnosed to be obese who were following up in Obesity clinic of Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolism Pediatric Unit (DEMPU), Cairo University in addition to one hundred healthy age and sex matched control children. All the included children were subjected to full history, examination and investigations including insulin resistance and serum magnesium levels
