Dissertation note: Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Physical Therapy - Department of Basic Science Summary: Objective: The measurement of knee joint space width between the distal femur and the proximal tibia is an indirect way of measuring the tibio- femoral cartilage thickness, which is considered a valuable parameter, in assessing knee cartilage disease. Purpose: the aim of this study was to determine the effect of body mass index on vertical dimension of the knee joint space in people with different variant of body mass index. Results and discussion: The mean medial knee joint space width of both knees was significantly lower in obese group than in both normal and overweight groups. The mean lateral knee joint space width of both knees was significantly lower in obese group than in both normal and overweight groups. There was no statistical significant difference of the mean lateral knee joint space between normal group and overweight group. Conclusion: There is significant effect of body mass index on vertical dimension of the knee joint space. There is a negative correlation between body mass index and knee joint space. It should take in consideration the body mass index as a line of prevention and treatment of knee joint degeneration disease.
