The aim of this thesis is to explain the motivations behind why firms vertically integrate and then examine the welfare implications of such motivations. Examining how vertical integration attects competition and welfare is important as it helps give a guideline on how to evaluate these mergers . Furthermore such analysis is both challenging and interesting as anti - competitive effects from such mergers are not as clearly visible as in horizontal mergers
