Thesis (M.Sc.) - Cairo University - Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine - Department of Oral (Radiology and diagnosis)
The determination of the chronological age of adolescents and young adults has gained increasing importance, because due to globalization in most of the industrialized nations the number of criminal cases has also significantly increased, and solving them can often be difficult. In such cases, age determination will be necessary to supplement or check the available pieces of information. Dental age assessment is used to estimate age when date of birth is uncertain. Many researches urge the dental clinicians to utilize CBCT technology whenever possible to assess the dento-maxillofacial region. The low radiation dose and the high image quality render CBCT with its friendly user software, the best imaging candidate in forensic dentistry. Application of 3D imaging in assessing dental development yields accurate data, thereby achieving more predictable results. This study was addressing the establishment of a new method for dental age assessment based on dental maturity scores in an Egyptian population using cone beam computed tomography. The current cross-sectional study was conducted on 90 CBCT records of Egyptian persons with an age range between8 and 16 years. The assessment of dental age was performed following demirjian{u2019}s method. Correlation between the total maturity score and chronological age, timing of complete maturation of permanent dentition, regression analysis between maturity score and age, and regression analysis between gender, individual tooth maturity score and age were performed
