The study is presented in four parts: First, An optimization process was carried out to design an axial flow compressor using a genetic algorithm where a Simple radial equilibrium model was adopted. Second, a code has been implemented that can do the off-design of multistage axial flow compressors using radial variation design. The compressor map was evaluated in the direct version. Third, a methodology was developed to study the effect of inlet guide vane (IGV) and variable stator vanes (VSVs) on the performance of the axial compressor. Fourth, schedule of (VSVs). Before introducing VSVs technique, the surge margin of the axial flow compressor in the case study vanished at a non-dimensional rotational speed of 80%. Applying the VSVs technique, the surge free operation was extended to a non-dimensional rotational speed of 65%.This is adequate because in practice gas turbine engines non dimensional idle speed is close to 67%
