Squalene is a hydrocarbon that is originally obtained and extracted from shark liver oil though it can also be obtained from plant sources primarily vegetable oils such as amaranth seed rice bran wheat germ and olives . All plants and animals produce squalene including humans . It plays an important role in many pharmaceutical and cosmetics applications
