520 | _aBackground: The development of a healthy bond with the newborn represents a central psychological process for the mother in the postpartum period. Mother-infant bonding (MIB) can start during the antenatal period and is related to post-partum bonding. The development of healthy post-partum MIB is crucial because it can positively influence maternal health during pregnancy and thus, neonatal outcome and future wellbeing. Methodology: This is a prospective longitudinal cohort study carried on 200 pregnant women attending antenatal care to determine the perinatal psychosocial factors that may affect the maternal infant bonding. Assessment was done firstly, during the second trimester then 4-6 weeks post-partum by screening of their socio-economic level, psychological state, partner violence and post-partum maternal infant bonding using different questionnaires. The assessment was done by getting obstetric history, Gelanny socioeconomic questionnaire, Composite Abuse Scale, Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale, Edinburgh post-partum depression scale and Post-partum Bonding Questionnaire. Results: this study showed that near two thirds of participants (66.5%) had abnormal maternal infant bonding with PBQ score ≥12. There was statistically significant association between impaired bonding and depression during pregnancy, intimate partner violence, planned pregnancy in the pre-natal period with p value 0.001, 0.029 and 0009 respectively. Regarding post-natal factors affecting maternal infant bond, they were post-partum anxiety and neonatal respiratory distress with p value 0.03 and 0.046 respectively. Conclusions: we concluded that maternal infant bonding mainly affected by maternal psychiatric state during pregnancy and post-partum so early screening will be helpful to detect mother in need for treatment and psychotherapy which help to form proper MIB. | ||
