520 | _aThe ideal casing material is expensive , strong , not subject to degradation in the environment , and will not affect water - quality samples by either leaching chemicals into or sorbing them from the groundwaterWe started a series of laboratory studies to study hydrochemistry of groundwater in different wells in the Delta aquifer , Nile aquifer and Nubian sandstone aquifer in Eastern and Western desert , evaluation of well water and to determine the overall suitability of nine casing materials , polyvinyl chloride [PVC] , polypropylene [PP] , polyethylene [PE] , fiber glass reinforced plastic [GRP] , stainless steel SS 304 and SS 316L , carbon steel [CS] , steel (S) and galvanized steel (GS) for groundwater monitoring applicationThe nine materials were exposed to artificial groundwater for up to 140 daysThis work was done to study some of the most aggressive environments that well casing materials are exposed toThe polymeric materials were observed for weight gain percentage , surface scanning and leaching or sorption studyThe metal alloys were observed for changes in corrosion products , corrosion rate and change in surface scanned by scanning electron microscope (SEM) The result showed that all polymeric materials were inertThey were not degraded by any of the tested samplesAlthough polymeric samples exposed to all water types did show weight gain less than 1In hundered persent , the most suitable polymeric material in fresh and slightly brackish water was polypropylene (PP) , in brackish water was polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and in salt water was fiberglass reinforced plastic (GRP) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) The most suitable metal alloy in fresh , slightly brackish , brackish and salt water is SS 316L | ||
