520 _aObjective: To assess the efficacy of low intensity pulsed ultrasound versus local anesthesia for inactivation of myofascial trigger points in the jaw muscles. Materials & methods: This study conducted on 20 patients diagnosed with active myofascial trigger points of masticatory muscles (masseter and temporalis). The selected patients were 16 females and 4 males ranging in age from 16 to 42 years with an average of 29 years. The selected patients were randomly divided into two equal groups: Group A comprised ten patients. The trigger points were exposed to low intensity pulsed ultrasound therapy. Group B comprised ten patients. The trigger points were injected with local anesthesia without vasoconstrictor (1ml of 3% mepivacaine). Results: Evaluation of both groups was performed in the following order: preoperative as a base line record and prior to the treatment in each following 11 sessions and then monthly after 1, 2 and 3 months after the end of treatment as means of the Pain pressure threshold (PPR) by algometer, mandibular active range of motion (AROM) and visual analogue scale (VAS) of pain intensity. On comparison between the two groups, all the evaluated parameters showed no statistically significant difference between the two groups through all periods. Conclusion: The present study has demonstrated a statistically significant benefit of Low intensity pulsed ultrasound and local anesthesia injection in term of increase in Pain pressure threshold and Maximum mouth opening as well as decrease in pain in patients with Myofascial trigger points of masticatory muscles without any significant side effects
