520 _aThis study was carried out to investigate the protective, antiatherogenic and therapeutic effects of linseed oil and walnut as Ü-linolenic acid (omega-3) rich foods upon feeding normal rats on hypercholesterolemic diets (HCD) and hypercholesterolemic rats on cholesterol free high fat diets. HCD based on palm stearin resulted in significant alterations in serum lipids, histopathological changes accompanied by a negative effect on liver function parameters. Dietary Ü-linolenic acid ameliorated these deleterious effects brought about by the HCD. Histopathological examination confirmed the protective and therapeutic effects of dietary Ü-linolenic acid against the alterations induced by the HCD in the liver, heart, aorta, brain and prostate of rats
