520 | _aWastewater from food processing is generally contains high concentration of organic matters , in suspended , colloidal , and soluble formsIn order to comply with the environmental legislation , different remedial actions have taken by those factories to reduce pollutant concentration before discharging their effluent to any public disposal system Wastewater from food industries is commonly treated through biological processesOne of these processes is the anaerobic treatmentThe upflow sludge blanket (UASB) reactor is a type of anaerobic treatment The research concerned with the treatment of a food processing wastewaterPilot plant was established in HOSTESS factory to investigate the advantages and the disadvantages of using UASB reactor as a pre - treatment systemThese were discussed by measuring the concentrations of various contaminants of the influent and effluent wastewaterThese experiments were done at variable hydraulic retention time (HRT) accordingly surface loading rate , to find out the best and optimum operating criteriaThis study also discusses the profile of various contaminants along the UASB reactor height The results obtained from experimental works shows that the removal efficiencies of COD , BOD5 and Oil and Grease at HRT of 24 hours were not high but it were acceptable , otherwise the removal efficiency of TSS was the best through this stage of the studyRemoval efficiencies of all contaminants at HRTs of 18 and 12 hours were fairly satisfactoryRemoval efficiencies of COD , BOD5 , TSS and O and G were 71 , 74 , 84 and 65 | ||
