520 _aA new Schiff bases L1 and L2 derived from the condensation of 6-formyl-7- hydroxy-5-methoxy-2-methylbenzopyran-4-one, derivative 1, (1) and 6-formyl-5,7- dihydroxy-2-methylbenzopyran-4-one, derivative 2, (2), respectively, with cephradine drug were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses and spectroscopic studies. Also, Zn(II), Cu(II), Co(II) and Ni(II) complexes of the schiff bases L1 and L2 were prepared by template reaction. Many tools of analysis such as elemental analyses, infrared, ultraviolet-visible and thermal analysis, as well as electrical conductance and magnetic susceptibility measurements were used to elucidate the structure of these complexes. The data showed that Zn(II)-L1 and Cu(II)-L1 complexes are 1:1 (M:L). The ligand L1was found to behave as monobasic bidentate in these complexes. On the other hand, Ni(II)-L1 and Co(II)-L1 form binuclear complexes. Ligand L2 acts as dibasic tetradentate in Zn(II)-L2, Cu(II)-L2, Ni(II)-L2 and Co(II)-L2 complexes which formed by stoichiometric ratio 2:1 (M:L). All the complexes are non-electrolytes. The luminescence properties of the prepared schiff bases and their complexes were studied. The photostability of Schiff bases and their Zn(II) and Cu(II) complexes were also studied. The photobiological activity of cephradine, benzopyran-4-one derivatives, L1, L2 Schiff bases and their complexes were studied on mosquito larvae to investigate the extent of their photosensitization efficiency in controlling noxious insects using direct sunlight(larvicidal effect). In vitro cytotoxicity study of the schiff base L1 and its complexes against HepG2 cell line was investigated by the MTT assay. The Schiff base, L1, exhibits better cytotoxic activity against HepG2 cell line than the complexes
