520 | _aPeriodontitis has long been defined as infection-mediated destruction of the alveolar bone and soft tissue attachment of the tooth. Persistent bacterial colonization of the tooth surface leads to chronic inflammation in periodontal tissues. Periodontal inflammation results in gingival bleeding. Osteocalcin is the major non collagenous calcium-binding single chain protein of bone and dentin matrix and it is a bone marker whose concentration in circulation has been used as a reflector of bone turnover as illustrated by a large number of studies It has been suggested by Kunimatsu et al, 1993, Nakashima et al, 1994 and Giannobile et al, 1995 that osteocalcin is a potential bone marker in both human and animal studies. This study included 30 patients suffering from chronic periodontitis with pocket depth greater or equal to 5mm. This study aimed to investigate gingival crevicular fluid osteocalcin levels as a marker of periodontitis through the detection of the levels of osteocalcin in gingival crevicular fluid from diseased sites in 30 subjects with chronic periodontitis and evaluation of the changes in osteocalcin level in relation to changes in probing depth, clinical attachment level, gingival index and plaque index before and after treatment. The design of the present study entailed 30 subjects that were divided into two groups. Both groups received full mouth supra gingival and sub gingival scaling and root planning while group B had Modified Widman{u2019}s Flap in addition. Periodontal probing depth, clinical attachment levels, gingival indices, plaque indices were recorded at the most periodontally affected site in each of the subjects in each group | ||
