520 _aHydrogels based on sodium alginate were successfully prepared via physical cross-linking. Firstly hydrogels composed of sodium alginate was cross-linked by Poly(4-vinyl pyridine) via ionic interaction. Various hydrogels were prepared with different percentages of gelation using different molar ratios between sodium alginate and Poly(4-vinylpyridine) (founded gelation percent 33, 43 and 58%). Secondly, hydrogels based on sodium alginate was cross-linked by poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) via H-bond (founded gelation percent 18, 25 and 32 %). The prepared hydrogels were characterized for their properties using quantitative FTIR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analyses and scanning electron microscopy. Application of the prepared hydrogels have been concerned such as dye uptake, swell ability, and metal sorption. Hydrogels increases the capacity of metal ions and acidic dye uptake compared to calcium alginate hydrogel. Hydrogels based on Sodium alginate and poly(4-vinylpyridine) increases the initial decomposition temperature of alginate. The interaction between PHEMA and alginate led to an improvement in the thermal stability of alginate by decreasing its rate of thermal degradation
