520 _aBackground: The severity of diabetic retinopathy is well known to have a close association with the duration of diabetes mellitus. Patients with recently diagnosed diabetes should have adequate eye examinations to eliminate the possibility of diabetic retinopathy being present because there is no accurate means of determining the duration of the disease. The severity of diabetic retinopathy in recently diagnosed type 2 diabetic Egyptian patients within three months was investigated in the present study.Aim: The aim of this study is to determine the severity of diabetic retinopathy at firstclinical presentation among newly discovered Egyptian diabetic patients at diabetes clinics at National Institute of Diabetes and Endocrinology (NIDE) and KasrElainy hospitals.Subjects and methods:The study included 200 patients of newly discovered diabetic patients who attended the diabetes clinics at NIDE and KasrElainy hospitals, Cairo, Egypt and underwent ophthalmological examination for the first time as a screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR).The screening procedures included history taking, weight, height and waist circumference have been measured. Body mass Index has been calculated. Blood pressure has been measured. General examination has been done. All patients undergo complete ophthalmological examination
